Another Storm System Moving In

David Sawyer

Hello, I’m Storm Team 9 Chief Meteorologist David Sawyer.  For the rest of Monday night, clouds will continue to thicken with overnight lows dropping to near 30 degrees inland and mid 30s near the coast.

These thickening clouds will bring another round of rain to the Eyewitness News 9 viewing area.  The best chance of rain will be as we head into the afternoon hours.  However, recent observations I’ve just made prior to this post show the precipitation moving much faster than our forecast models are predicting.  If the precipitation arrives during the morning, inland sections of the WNCT-TV 9 viewing area may observe some sleet or light snow before the precipitation changes to all rain.  Although it will be quite chilly with inland temperatures in the upper 30s to mid 40s and near 50 at the coast, temperatures above freezing should not cause any travel problems if any precipitation is frozen.

The rain could be heavy at times Tuesday night as the center of the low pressure system moves across eastern North Carolina.  New rain totals are expected to be from half an inch to over an inch where heavier downpours take place.

Of course, this is not good news for our area with the saturated ground and flooding rivers.  Storm Team 9 will keep you posted on our area river levels and forecasts.

As the moisture from this system moves out, we may see a lingering shower early on Wednesday as colder and drier air moves in.  If enough cold air mixes in with this lingering moisture, there may be a brief time of snow flurries or snow showers.  However, no significant accumulation is expected at this time.  Otherwise, expect a very WINDY and cold day on Wednesday with highs only in the 30s and wind chill values in the teens and 20s!
